Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Untitled black cloth 23x33cm. (2), v, 97pp printed to the rectos. Covers fine, interiors mostly fine with some ms notes in ink. The inner lower board has a gussetted pocket. As all items listed in the contents are present, this may have been intended for note paper and related material. Self-published and extremely rare, with Worldcat and Library Hub locating only one copy of a differently numbered 1983 edition between them, along with his separately issued "Intermediate Gulf and Saudi Spoken Arabic" which appeared in 1982 (OCLC 1392215994 and 1392280876: both Cardiff University). Kirkbright developed his teaching into "Spoken Arabic Step-by-Step", which was published by Motivate in Dubai with audio cassettes (1992-93) and CDs (2008). He prepard this in Sharjah in March 1978, checked it with local informants, and with Captain Rashid Mazrou's help in recording accompanying cassettes (not present). This stated revised version takes into account the difficulties experienced while teaching European students. By this time Kirkbright had been living in the Arab World for over 11 years. He began to learn Arabic at Durham University in 1958, then attained an MA in Linguistics from Leeds with a dissertation on Arabic dialects. He was an Associate of the Institute of Linguistics, and member of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (p.ii, v). His course is made up of 20 Lessons covering grammar with examples of greetings and other useful expressions, days of the week, colours etc. He supplements this with a wider vocabulary in 9 themed Appendices covering the family, shopping, business (including several Ministries, Departments and the Chamber of Commerce), the hotel, directions, countries, towns in the Arab World (an alphabetical list from Abu Dhabi to Umm al Quwein), professions, and the body. Also included are lists of common adjectives and verbs.
