Hardcover. Condition: Good. 23.5 x 15.5 cm. 255pp. Glossy illustrated boards. There is some wrinkling/damp staining noticable to the bottom of the last ~ 50 pages. This does not effect readability. Fun inscription from one of the editors, Douglas Ming: ' "Rocky Ranger" alias stac Ming I tried to include a chapter entitled "Fly Fishing on the Moon" but the publisher would not let me. Thanks for all of the help and support through the years. Love Doug "Zeke". P.S. On to the Moon, then Mars; however, we need to do some serious flyfishing in Colorado first!! - 12/25/89" Scientists grew plants from moon soil for the first time in 2022. From NASA: This work provides information on research and experimentation concerning various aspects of food production in space and particularly on the moon. Options for human settlement of the moon and Mars and strategies for a lunar base are discussed. The lunar environment, including the mineralogical and chemical properties of lunar regolith are investigated and chemical and physical considerations for a lunar-derived soil are considered. It is noted that biological considerations for such a soil include controlled-environment crop production, both hydroponic and lunar regolith-based; microorganisms and the growth of higher plants in lunar-derived soils; and the role of microbes to condition lunar regolith for plant cultivation. Current research in the controlled ecological life support system (CELSS) project is presented in detail and future research areas, such as the growth of higher research plants in CELSS are considered. Optimum plant and microbiological considerations for lunar derived soils are examined.…

Fish protection and downstream migration systems at hydropower plants are crucial measures for protecting fish from turbine-related injury and ensuring safe downstream passage. While knowledge regarding the construction of effective systems has steadily expanded in recent years, fish behavior?a fundamental basis for designing functional fish protection and migration concepts?remains under-researched. However, understanding fish reactions and behavioral patterns under specific flow conditions and facility configurations provides valuable insights for designing effective systems. Against this backdrop, the behavior of various fish species was investigated in relation to so-called shallow-angled rack and bypass channel systems. These laboratory studies, conducted jointly by biologists and hydraulic engineers, focused on the behavior of downstream-migrating fish at hydropower plants equipped with a rack inclined at a shallow angle to the riverbed, combined with a bypass channel. The report summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding shallow-angled rack and bypass channel systems and?based on the reactions and behavioral patterns observed in the detailed laboratory experiments and taking specific hydraulic conditions into account?derives preliminary recommendations for the layout, design, and operation of the system.
