April 1853 in Hyrynsalmi; 26. Juli 1936 in Helsinki) war ein finnischer Archäologe und Konservator des historischen Staatsmuseums in Helsingfors. Appelgren war der erste Staatsarchäologe Finnlands und hat durch die Einführung und Anwendung neuer Methoden die Entwicklung der archäologischen Forschung und das Museumswesen in Finnland stark beeinflusst. Auf seine Initiative katalogisierten die Museen ihre Bestände und es wurde ein verbesserter Standard des Ausgrabungsberichts eingeführt. Durch seine Ausgrabungen in Turku um 1900 begann die wissenschaftliche archäologische Erforschung der in Finnland. Er legte bei seinen Grabungen größeren Wert auf Bewahrung des Befundes. Appelgren war Mitglied der Finnischen Altertumsgesellschaft und korrespondierendes Mitglied der Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Altertumskunde der Ostseeprovinzen Russlands. Otto Hjalmar Appelgren also Hjalmar Appelgreen or Hjalmar Appelgren-Kivalo (born April 5, 1853 in Hyrynsalmi, July 26, 1936 in Helsinki) was a Finnish archaeologist and curator of the State Historical Museum in Helsingfors. Appelgren was Finland's first state archaeologist and has greatly influenced the development of archaeological research and museums in Finland through the introduction and application of new methods. On his initiative, the museums cataloged their holdings and an improved standard of the excavation report was introduced. His excavations in Turku around 1900 began scientific archaeological research in Finland. During his excavations he attached great importance to the preservation of the findings. Appelgren was a member of the Finnish Archeology Society and a corresponding member of the Society for the History and Archeology of the Baltic Provinces of Russia.
