Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition / First Printing per complete number line including number one. Soft cover in very good condition with wraps unmarked & showing only a ghost of shelf wear Interior text block clean and tigh; no writings, no markings noted. Contains black & white photos and several maps…. 114 numbered pages. From the Foreword, "These case studies . . . insights into the richness and complexity of human life as it is lived in different ways and in different places. They are written by men and women who have lived in the societies they write about and who are professionally trained as observers and interpreters of human behavior." "The Barabaig of Tanzania , East Africa, numbering about 20,000 are one of the few surviving "cattle complex" people of what was only recently a wide-spread and classic cultural type in Africa. Barabaig culture in its traditional form survived both the German colonial administration and the British Mandate. Today, the independent government of Tanzania is implementing transformative change. The wearing of the traditional red-ochred toga has been banned, a basic subsistence shift from herding and seminomadism to sedentary horticulturalism is being programmed, ritual murder is severely punished, and hundreds of young people have been forcibly reeducated. Barabaig culture, as George Klima describes it, no longer exists in pristine form. This makes what he describes of special significance. Through his case study, students can acquire an understanding of one of he major forms of adaptation created by man in his milennia of cultural evolution".
