Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Fourteen-year-old Chad Chapel has a dream: to someday find a great treasure. Previous efforts have only awarded him trouble. His parents--his mother especially--often try to dissuade his adventurous ambitions, but when ninety-three-year-old Anston Kagle innocently shares a story of lost gold hidden on "Sacred Ground," nothing will sway the young sleuth from its pursuit. Chad secretly enlists the help of his best friend, Rodney Meeks, and schoolmate Maggie Pearce. Rodney is daring and unpredictable. The Sacred Ground is said to be of Native American origin, and Maggie is a full-blooded Cherokee, giving rise to Chad and Rodney's belief that she is the only person who can show them what to look for. Maggie is dubious of the scheme but is intrigued enough by Chad's charm to join the effort. Set in a small village in rural Southern Indiana, the search leads the trio on a roller coaster of challenging events, full of emotional highs and troublesome lows. Spiritual undertones--including the powers of prayer, ancient chants, spirits, ghosts, and curses--haunt the teens throughout their search. Difficulties and dangers far beyond their initial expectations plague their efforts. Yet they persist. Will the illusive treasure be found, and at what cost? The Sacred Ground does not reveal its secrets easily, and what is found surprises everyone. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - On the night of August 67, 1943, six American destroyers steamed into Vella Gulf two hundred miles northwest of Guadalcanal and laid an ambush for the Japanese destroyers that nightly ferried reinforcements into the Solomon Islands. Within thirty-five minutes, three enemy ships were on their way to the bottom of the gulf, a fourth limped away, and the U.S. Navy's tin cans scored what was hailed as "an attack that every destroyer sailor dreams about," "a little classic of naval warfare," "a perfect American victory." From the admirals at their charts to the sailors on deck, from the devastating torpedo strikes to the blazing gun salvoes, The Perfect Victory reconstructs this turning point of World War II in the Pacific.A year and a half into the war, success against Japan's battleships, cruisers, and destroyers eluded the U.S. Navy, which rigidly held to old-school doctrine while its badly flawed torpedoes sputtered. By the summer of 1943, the Americans were ready for a bold move. Bolstered by hard-bought experience and better torpedoes, and forced by the loss of cruisers to consider new tactics, naval commanders finally saw the offensive possibilities of destroyers, which had traditionally been used to screen the big battleships at the core of the U.S. battle fleet. When radar picked up four Japanese destroyers in early August 1943, American admirals turned their own destroyers loose. Days earlier, the navy had attempted to intercept the Japanese with a flotilla of PT boats, with disastrous results, especially for Lt. John F. Kennedy and his PT-109. Now destroyers set a trap in Vella Gulf. As the four Japanese destroyers approached, three American tin cans launched a massive torpedo salvo while another three followed up with their guns. Soon the lead enemy ships were ablaze. Three Japanese destroyers went down, and the fourth steamed off with a hole through its rudder. The Americans suffered not a single casualty the perfect victory indeed.

Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. Reprint Edition, First Printing Thus. xi, [1], 244 pages Illustrations. Oversize book, measuring 10 inches by 8 inches. Foreword by Charles R. ("Cal") Calhoun, Captain, U.S. Navy (Ret.). Contains Foreword, Acknowledgments, and chapters on 1939, 1940, 1941, Malta, Guadalcanal, Vella Gulf, Gilberts and Marshalls, Saipan and Guam, New Guinea to Morotai, Leyte Gulf, Kamikaze, Lingayen Gulf, Okinawa, Part 1; Okinawa, Part 2; Final Voyage; Bibliography; and Index. First and foremost, according to the author, this is the history of USS Lang (DD-399). Certainly each man that served on this destroyer's decks was a critical part of the life she exhibited. But it was Lang that was the common bond to the men who served her. She brought them home, through one of the must turbulent times in recorded modern history. The massive challenge of both the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns assured a massive team effort in procuring the victory. And for this reason, a good portion of the credit for Lang's success must be attributed to the expertise of a great number of other ships' officers and crews, pilots and support crews of the Navy, Marines, and Army, and a superior leadership. They called her the "Lucky Lang." Commissioned 30 March 1939, she ranged from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean, from Scotland to the Mediterranean, before traversing the Panama Canal to engage the enemy in the Pacific at Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Kwajalein, Saipan, Leyte, and Okinawa. The Lang wreaked havoc along the "Tokyo Express" route and helped decimate Japanese air power. Yet, though heavily involved in nearly every major campaign of the war in the Pacific, she survived it all with hardly a scratch, and not one of her roster received the slightest enemy-inflicted wound. Over such an extended time and equal number of actions, no other U.S. Naval warship could boast such a record. Even the sum of her hull number's digits (399) adds up to 21, a lucky number to be sure. This is the story, the complete history of the USS Lang as told by the ship's official biographer, himself the fortunate son of a former Lang sailor.
