First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is actually a compilation of essays by many writers about ancient and early Asian and European history with the addition of a great many illustrations. The book has sound hinges and is not cocked. There are a few words on the first free endpage; otherwise pages are clean, unmarked and undamaged. Exterior covers are clean and the gilt lettering on the spine is bright. There is a small bump on the back cover and one shallow dent in the top edge of the back cover. No bumped corners or rubbing to extremities. The dust jacket is clean with light toning (age tanning) to the white portions (inside flaps). It has a single small tear and a light crease at the top edge of the inside front flap and a couple of other light creases near the top edge. Very little wear otherwise. It has been put in a clear archival sleeve to keep it looking great. The book, dust jacket and sleeve will be bubble-wrapped and carefully packed in a sturdy box to ensure safe transit. This is a heavy, oversize book that will probably require extra funds for shipping outside of the United States. The following essays (or chapters) are included: "Gift of the Nile" by Leonard Cottrell; "The First Law Code" by Jean Bottero; "The Eruption of Santorin" by M.S.F. Hood; "The Aryan Invasion of India" by Eric J. Soft cover. A fascinating letter(ALS) written by Jack (John) Knowles to prominent photographer Jerry Stoll who worked for Contact Magazine in the 1960s as their celebrity & jazz photographer. Stoll requests a recipe for "Baptist Cake" from Knowles, who responds wittily and in detail, writing that there is no hashish in his recipe. Written in blue ink on 1 sheet of paper measuring 10" x 6.5": Hotel Bossert/98 Montague St./Brooklyn, N.Y. / Nov. 24, 1960"Dear Jerry, Thanks for your letter, & for the copies of Contact which looks extremely interesting & very promising indeed for the future. A West Coast Grove Press is a very good idea. My recipeif its not too latewont be much like what I expect youre getting from other "writers & artists": it requires no hashish, & has never been heard of at the Corden (sic) Bleu; no coffee house has ever served it. It is just a simple West Viginia mountain dish my mother (of course) used to make and it is called Baptist Cake. Do you like the sound of that? You don't need twenty lessons to know how to make it either: butter a skillet lightly & heat to medium degree. Roll bread dough about 1/4 inch thick. Prick dough several times with a fork. Fry a few minutes on one side & a few on the other. Serve immediately with plenty of butter. Simple? Im sorry our evening to discuss your future was disrupted by that actor from New York. I wanted top see you again for a calmer meeting and called several times but you were out & the supt (sic) I knew youd left town. You seem well set however & all the best for the future If I should write anything suitable Id be happy to send it along to ContactBest, Jack Knowles"(And in Jerrys hand about Knowles, he writes: "His First Novel A Separate Peace came out last year & made a great stir. Has published short stories. Used to be associate editor of Holiday. Quit to concentrate full time on his own work. "Note: Also included is a full page magazine ad with a photo of Knowles from the Macmillan Company touting the brilliance of A Separate Peace. Jerry Stoll, a noted Bay Area photographer and filmmaker who made classic pictures of Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and other jazz artists, died Jan. 21 at his Oakland home of natural causes. He was 80.The official photographer for the Monterey Jazz Festival from its inception in 1958 to the mid-'60s, Mr. Stoll was a ubiquitous presence at festivals and jazz clubs, an insider whose natural feeling and affection for the music and people who made it resulted in pictures of remarkable intensity and emotion. He was a warm, salty character with a gruff voice, a great laugh and a questioning mind.A lifelong political activist who joined the Communist Party in San Francisco but quit after the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary, Mr. Stoll also made award-winning documentaries, including the anti-Vietnam war film "Sons and Daughters," and films about Daniel Ellsberg and the Black Panthers. He also produced and distributed films for American Documentary Films. The founding president of the artists' group Bay Area Photographers, Mr. Stoll was represented in a number of photographic exhibitions and books over the years. His book "I Am Lover" focused on Bohemian life in San Francisco's North Beach. His photographs were also featured in the book "Our San Francisco. " Writing about Mr. Stoll's pictures in that book, the late Chronicle music and social critic Ralph J. Gleason said: "This is the special gift of Jerry Stoll -- to show the souls of people through their faces and thus the soul of the city."Mr. Stoll was born in Wayzata, Minn., and attended St. Louis Park High School. A state Golden Gloves boxing champion, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 7th Armored Division in England during World War II. An injury precluded him from participating in the D-Day invasion.Mr. Stoll studied philosophy and history at the University of Minnesota and at San Francisco State. In the Bay Area, he became involved in the c.
