Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. A collection of 58 loose black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 3.5" x 11" with some captions. The photographs are about near fine and have been removed from a photo album with black paper remnants attached to the versos of some. A collection of photographs compiled by a woman, possibly named Edna Kohmann, who was a student at Smith College in 1915. The photos show women around the campus posing with their friends, in costumes, and in large groups. A pictorial postcard of a building on campus has "Miss Edna Kohmann" written on the verso, though it is unclear who she was but it could be the singer Edna Louisa KOhmann who was touring the United States east coast in 1915. They are also photographed playing sports including baseball, basketball, tennis, and field hockey. An interesting shot of the women in the middle of a basketball game is seen here. There are also photos of large crowds of students participating in events on the campus including a large May Day festival featured here in two wonderful panaormas with a long procession of ladies holding a daisy chain. The women are seen dancing in gauze dresses and woodland nymph-style costumes. They are also seen in a large group outside of a building with a caption that reads "Washington's birthday 1915." Many of the photos show the ladies in costume including men's clothing and black face. The students are also seen during the graduation ceremonies in cap and gown. One photo shows a group of women playing instruments in a field including a harp and cello. Another shows them posed on a wooden scaffold in winter clothes. A photo of a sign on campus reads, "Smith College campus private grounds - Automobiles limited to 5 miles an hour. Main avenues closed to business vehicles. Dogs prohibited except in leash. Selling or soliciting not permitted. Crossing the lawns forbidden." Posed next to this sign is a guilty looking dog. An interesting collection of photography surrounding a young woman's time in college.
