In 1986, Kopp successfully ran as an independent for the the California Senate in a district straddling San Francisco and San Mateo counties. He won reelection in 1990 and 1994, being unable to run again because of term limits. During his tenure in the California Senate Kopp helped push through a BART extension to San Francisco International Airport. Governor Pete Wilson appointed Kopp to a judgeship in San Mateo County, in which he served until his retirement in 2004. More recently, he has served as a member of the California High Speed Rail Authority.Kopp.
