This portfolio was the first published by The Royal Photographic Society in June 1931. It was produced in honour of the Stephen H. Tyng Foundation and was available for purchase by The Society's members. The first photogravure is Bewegungs Studie (Study of Movement) by Prof. Rudolf Koppitz (25.5 x 19cm), one of the most iconic and widely reproduced Austrian photographs of the early part of the twentieth century. The photograph's sophisticated composition contains elements of Modernism, Pictorialism, and Surrealism, and also relates to the Viennese Secession and the Wienner Werkstätte movements in its stylized grace and perfection of craft. Taken in 1925, Bewegungsstudie became Koppitz's most famous image during his lifetime and was frequently exhibited and reproduced. Koppitz (1884-1936), who was actually of Czech origins but is more often credited as Austrian, originally created this masterful photograph in 1925. The nude dancer, credited to be the Russian Claudia Issatschenko, (but is more likely, her daughter, the ballet dancer and choreographer Tatyana Issatschenko Gsovsky b. 1901), is photographed with her head thrown dramatically back and flanked by three dark-robed women, portrayed by dancers from the Vienna State Opera. Today, Koppitz's work is appreciated but difficult to categorize. Elements of his life and creative development parallel that of his contemporaries. Like Edward Steichen, he served as an aerial combat photographer in World War I. With Heinrich Kühn he shared a belief in the beauty and redemptive value of nature. Like Pierre Dubreuil he achieved fame in his own day as a creator of entirely novel imagery that had no direct corollary in the photography of the time. He shared with these photographers a deep understanding of photographic craft and utilized a repertoire of techniques to execute his photographic ideas. Despite these resemblances, Koppitz's work and his aesthetic are distinctly his own. The other five photogravures in the collection are: St Malo by Arthur W. Burgess (20.5 x 25.5cm); A Russian Boy by Alexander Leventon (20.5 x 25.5cm); Mrs. Violet Gordon Woodhouse at the Harpsichord by Herbert Lambert (19 x 25.5cm); Groote Kerke Veere by John H. Anderson (19 x 25.5cm); and Muriel Evans by Arthur F. Kales (25.5 x 20.5cm).

Overlapping textured card covers, the front panel lettered in gilt, with a small reproduction (115 × 150 mm, lightly rubbed) of one of the photogravures mounted in the centre; contents post-bound; the first tissue-guard is slightly chipped with minimal loss; a fine example. The first photogravure is 'Bewegungs Studie (Study of Movement) by Prof. Rudolf Koppitz of Vienna', featuring dancers from the Vienna State Opera Ballet. Rudolf Koppitz (1884-1936), was born in the Czech Republic; he was a Photo-Secessionist, and 'one of the leading representatives of art photography in Vienna between the world wars' (Wikipedia). The descriptive note on the contents list is unequivocal: 'This striking composition was exhibited in 1927 and is generally admitted to be one of the outstanding achievements of all time'. Modern commentators tend not to disagree: the 'languid nude, elaborately robed women and undeniable sensuality, in the context of its rigorous and artistic composition, bring to mind the sexual morbidity of Viennese artists like Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha, as well as the Swiss symbolist painter Ferdinand Hodler and has made it as unforgettable then as it is today. It has become Koppitz's signature image' (Wikipedia). The other five photogravures are 'St Malo' by Arthur Burgess, Manchester; 'A Russian Boy' by Alexander Leventon, Rochester, USA; 'Mrs Violet Gordon Woodhouse at the Harpsichord' by Herbert Lambert, Bath (also reproduced on the front cover); 'Groote Kerke Veere' by John H. Tyng of New York, an ardent well-wisher of the Society and one deeply interested in pictorial photography, vested with the trustees a sum of money . the annual interest on which was to be expended on the purchase of pictorial photographs of outstanding merit . As the majority of members of the Society seldom have an opportunity to visit the Society's house and to inspect the photographic collections there, the Pictorial Group has undertaken the publication of the present portfolio, which is hoped may be the forerunner of others' (this appears to have been a forlorn hope). Die vorliegende Heliogravüre von Rudolf Koppitz' berühmtester Aufnahme stammt aus dem Jahr 1931 und war eine von sechs Tafeln, die die Royal Photographic Society als Mappe mit dem Titel "Pictures from the Tyng Collection" herausgab. Koppitz' Aufnahme aus dem Jahr 19…25 zeigt drei Frauen in bodenlangen, schwarzen Kleidern, die sich dicht aneinander schmiegen und so einen dunklen Hintergrund bilden, vor dem sich eine nackte Frau, offensichtlich eine Tänzerin, akrobatisch nach hinten beugt. Die vier Frauen dürften dem russischen Ballettensemble von Claudia Issatschenko angehört haben, das 1925 im Wiener Apollotheater als "Plastisches Ballett" gastiert hatte. - "Unabhängig davon, wie verhalten Rudolf Koppitz' erste Versuche auf dem Gebiet der Aktfotografie waren, das Genre wurde schnell zu seinem Markenzeichen. Koppitz blühte in seiner neuen Rolle als künstlerischer Aktfotograf auf, und schon im Jahr 1925 schuf er sein mit Abstand erfolgreichstes Werk, die 'Bewegungsstudie'. Sie wurde zahllose Male von ihm selbst sowie auch von seiner Frau abgezogen, schon zu Lebzeiten vielfach verkauft, war regelmäßig in Ausstellungen zu sehen, heimste eine Auszeichnung nach der anderen ein, erschien in den verschiedensten Publikationen und bekam durchwegs Lob von der nationalen und internationalen Presse. Bis zum heutigen Tag erzielt sie bei Auktionen Spitzenpreise. Sie war und ist sein größter künstlerischer wie kommerzieller Erfolg und gehört zu den am meisten publizierten Bildern der Fotogeschichte" (Vukovic, S. 31). - "1929, als in der Encyclopaedia Britannica erstmals ein Eintrag zu künstlerischer Fotografie publiziert wurde, diente diese - besonders in den USA - kommerziell erfolgreichste und vielfach ausgezeichnete Darstellung als Illustration.
