Published on the 125th anniversary of the introduction of lithography to Russia, this monograph examines first era of lithographic work in the country (1816-1818). Included is text on the early Russian lithographers of the period and their work, accompanied by tipped-in small b/w images reproducing examples of their work, throughout the text. The numerous artists discussed include Karl von Hampeln (1794-1880s), Ivan Petrovich Beggrov (1793-1877) and Vladimir Ivanovich Pogonkin (1793-1850), as well as work by Baron Pavel Lvovitch Schilling (1786 - 1837), among others. The final sections include appendices, an index, a chronological timeline of Russian lithography, and a series of 27 additional plates of b/w photographic images reproducing examples of lithographs from the period. Text in Russian. Wrappers with some light staining. Spine chipped and rubbed, with text handwritten in ink. Ink stamps and notes on the back cover. Interior mostly clean, save for age toning to pages, and sporadic instances of minor sporadic foxing the margins. Images and text through mostly clean and vibrant.
