First edition of this richly illustrated book showing Heian period ritual clothing. It outlines the appropriate dress for royal attendants, warriors, priests, and court officials. The captions describe the details of the clothing, including rules about carrying swords. This is one of the 134 books in Imaizumi Sadasuke's Kojitsu sosho series, published between 1899 and 1906. Imaizumi (1863-1944) was a Shinto scholar who studied literature at the University of Tokyo. He believed that Meiji period academics were excessively focused on Western thoughts and ideas, so wrote many books on Japanese traditional culture and customs to counteract this trend. He became director of the Institute of Japanese Classics Research, the central government organization for the training of Shinto priests, in 1918. Octavo, pp. 16. With 14 colour woodblock prints; text in Japanese. Original brown and white striped wrappers, renewed blue thread fukuro-toji binding, spine ends capped with purple cloth, paper label to front wrapper lettered in black. Binding somewhat worn, label a little rubbed, contents bright: a very good copy.
