Folding black and white copper engraving bird's-eye view map with original paper wrapper, wrapper is fragile and chipped at the edges, 39 x 54.5cm, inset at lower left gives distances. Fold points neatly re-enforced on the verso, some browning on reverse but the image itself is very good and clean. An attractive black-and-white delicately printed bird's-eye view map of the Ise Bay area, showing the view from the Juhachitei Inn (18th Inn) which was also known as T?f?ya (East Wind Inn), which stands on a high hill slope near the Asamagadake Shrine. We can see the inn on the right edge of the map with a white flag on a pole. Probably created as a souvenir for visitors to the inn, the beautifully detailed map shows the principal landmarks of the Ise area - a crucial site of the national pilgrimage - and in the far distance, the sun rising behind the peak of Mt. Fuji. Other major mountains in Kanto, Kansai and even on the Japan Sea side region are featured in the distance. There are detailed depictions of coasts and woodland, and both Japanese and western sailing vessels in the Ise Bay. We can also see the tiny figures of visitors around the precincts of the inn. An inset box gives distances to the main shrines and other landmarks of the district. The map comes in an envelope decorated with a printed image of a Japanese woman and a man in western dress gazing out at the view through binoculars, accompanied by a small child.
