These symbolic equations quantify change within a system, thus offering powerful tools across various scientific disciplines. The author investigates the conditions under which a given differential equation possesses solutions and provides methods for finding them. By extending this theory to systems of equations, the author establishes a basis for studying complex interactions within systems. This work provides a rigorous mathematical framework for understanding dynamic systems, making it an invaluable resource for scientists and mathematicians alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book delves into the profound significance of partial algebraic differential equations in examining complex analytical functions and their relationships with diverse variables. The author, a renowned expert in the field, illuminates the conditions under which these differential equations yield convergent power series solutions, offering a comprehensive framework for understanding their behavior. Within its broader historical context, the book significantly extends the pioneering work of Weierstrass and others on the subject. It provides a rigorous and in-depth exploration of the underlying ideas behind partial differential equations, extending the theory to encompass intricate phenomena. Through detailed mathematical analysis, the author demonstrates the existence and convergence of power series solutions that fulfill the given differential equations. This rigorous approach uncovers profound insights into the nature of analytical functions and their dependence on multiple variables. Overall, the book unveils fresh perspectives on a fundamental mathematical concept, opening avenues for further research and applications in diverse scientific domains. Extracted from a larger volume without original rappers. Good, crisp condition. [++] Vladimir Onufrievich Kovalevsky 1842 1883) was a Russian academic and paleontologist. One of the first adopters of Charles Darwin in Russia, he is most notable for his early work on the evolution of the Hippomorpha family. He married [the great mathematician] Sofia Kovalevskaya and had a daughter named Sofia, nicknamed 'Fufa'. After spending some years together as a couple, Vladimir, financially ruined, a victim of depression and unable to support his wife and daughter, committed suicide."--Wikipedia.

[++] This is the first edition in French published from the Swedish original, "Om ljusets fortplantning uti ett kristalliniskt medium" from Swenska Konigl. Veterskaps Akademiens Foerbandlingar, no. 2, published 13 Februari 1884, 5pp (text on pp 3-5, titlepage and verso are pp. 1-2). This paper was actually published two days earlier in France than Stockholm, though the Stockholm issue is far more scarce. [++] Kowalevsky published "just 9 works [in the sciences]: 3 of pure mathematical nature and 6 on the mathematical applications to the problems of celestial mechanics (1 article), physics of crystals (2 articles), and classical mechanics of rigid body rotational motion (3 articles)"--from Dr. Elena N. Polyakhova, "150th Anniversary of Sofia Kovalevskaya (1850-1891) her scientific legacy in Celestial Mechanics of equilibrium figures of fluid mass in axial rotation". [++] Moscow-born Sophie Kowalevsky (1850-91), mathematician/memoirist/novelist, did important work on PDE, analysis, mechanics, integrals, and Saturn's rings. She was the first woman in Europe in modern times to be appointed to a full professorship, and was the first woman to be an editor of a mathematics journal, and was the first woman to be awarded (the equivalent of) a doctorate. "Kovalevsky was the greatest woman mathematician prior to the twentieth century."--Complete DSB online. [++] Kovalevsky studied privately with Weierstrass, Kirchhoff, and von Helmholtz (as women were not allowed to attend classes at university), and received a degree (awarded a doctorate summa cum laude from the University of Göttingen) in absentia in 1874 for her thesis on partial differential equations, and won the Paris Academy Prize in 1888 for a paper on the integration of the equations of motion for a solid body rotating around a fixed point (the "Kowalevsky top"). In 1884 she became a professor of mathematics at Stockholm, first woman editor of a mathematics journal ("Acta Mathematica"), and in 1889 she finally was recognized by the committees in Stockholm and was granted a lifetime professorship there. [++] In all of this after her unsuccessful attempts to find work in academia culminated in professorial nothingness in 1874, she left the professional life and entered the family life, where she evidently abandoned math research until being called back to it in 1880! During 1881-1883 she left Russia again for Berlin and Paris for studies, returning to Russia in 1883 after the suicide death of her Darwin-supporting paleontologist husband. She gave an invited talk in that year to the Seventh Russian Naturalists Convention in Odessa on the refraction of light in crystals her first physics paper which was published in Swedish as "Omljusets fortplantning uti ett kristalliniskt medium" [the French version of the paper offered here].

Kowalevsky, "a Russian investigator, [made] the observations that were most instrumental--partly because of their own inherent worth and brilliance, partly because of the fortunate time at which they were published--in effecting the bond between embryology and anatomy, and between the study of ontogeny and phylogeny. Alexander Kowalevski, in the years 1867-71, found that all the invertebrate embryos he studied . . . were formed of the same primary layers as the vertebrate embryos, and, furthermore, that in all of them alike the layers arise in the same fashion, the inner layer being produced from the outer by a process of invagination. . . . The researches of Kowalevski bore immediate fruit. . . . The publication of Kowalevski's observations on the universality of the germ-layers and on their comparable origin in a multitude of forms made it possible to consider the evolution of the individual and the evolution of the race in the same light" (Oppenheimer, Essays in the History of Embryology, pp. 264-66). Kowalevsky and A. F. Marion collaborated on a monograph published in 1883. Signed by Author(s).
