Ich hoffe, dass dieser Ergänzungsband den Besitzern der ersten Bände eine erwünschte Zugabe sein werde. Wie bei der kriegschirurgischen Technik habe ich mir die Aufgabe gestellt, kurz und bündig, d.h. mit Vermeidung aller unnöthigen Worte, die Operationen zu schildern, denn, dass man durch gute Abbildungen mit kurzem Text rascher belehren kann, als durch langathmige Beschreibungen ohne Bilder, bedarf wohl keines Beweises. Ich nenne als meinen Mitarbeiter Herrn Dr. E. Kowalzig, weil er mir bei dieser Arbeit vielfach behülflich gewesen ist, vor Allem auch dadurch, dass er den grössten Theil der Bilder gezeichnet hat." Esmarch is renowned for his introduction of the first aid bandage on the battelfield; and his technique of artificial bloodlessness during the surgery of extremities.
