Paperback. Condition: New. How can we reconfigure our picture of modern art after the postcolonial turn without simply adding regional art histories to the Eurocentric canon? Transmodern examines the global dimension of modern art by tracing the crossroads of different modernisms in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Featuring case studies in Indian modernism, the Harlem Renaissance and post-war abstraction, it demonstrates the significance of transcultural contacts between artists from both sides of the colonial divide. The book argues for the need to study non-western avant-gardes and Black avant-gardes within the west as transmodern counter-currents to mainstream modernism. It situates transcultural art practices from the 1920s to the 1960s within the framework of anti-colonial movements and in relation to contemporary transcultural thinking that challenged colonial concepts of race and culture with notions of syncretism and hybridity.

First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 16 x 23 cm, 280 pages, 28 color & 23 b/w illustrations. - Museums of contemporary artas they have been defined, activated, and understood over the past thirty yearsare in need of a reassessment to re-think the traditional notion of the "museum." With its traditional core tasks of collection and conservation, this historic category stands in contrast to the term "contemporary." This volume takes a variety of complementary perspectives on today's museology as it reflects upon the paradoxes underlying the very concept of the museum of contemporary art. Composed of three chapters"Now," "Tomorrow," and "Flux"and gathering together original essays, extensive conversations, as well as canonical texts, this anthology addresses questions regarding the roles and tasks of the contemporary art museum. It discusses its double character as a site of both production and conservation, and emphasizes its relation to different public spheres. It also explores ways of dealing with the standards, norms, and regulations that emerge from the practices of collecting, organizing, and educating.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In a complex tangle of past and present, contemporary artists engage with the legacies of non-Western 20th-century counterculture movementsIncreasingly, contemporary artists are returning to the visual traditions of the non-European avant-garde movements that opposed Western Modernism from the 1920s to the 1970s. Avantgarde & Liberation explores this phenomenon, delving into the motivations for artists to align themselves with decolonial avant-gardes in Africa, Asia and the "Black Atlantic" region, and to take a stand against current forms of racism, fundamentalism or neocolonialism. The book gathers a selection of work by 25 artists from across Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas to reflect on this question of temporality, as well as the possibility of engaging with old and new liberation movements.Artists include: Omar Ba, Radcliffe Bailey, Yto Barrada, Mohamed Bourouissa, Diedrick Brackens, Serge Attukwei Clottey, william cordova, Leslie Hewitt, Zoe Leonard, Fahamu Pecou, Cauleen Smith, Vivan Sundaram, Moffat Takadiwa.
