Issued in Madrid in 1588, Una breve y sumaria descripción del Reino de Polonia is a Castilian compendium of Marcin Kromer's Polonia (first published in Cologne, 1577), the principal contemporary source of knowledge about the Polish kingdom in Europe. It was written by Miko?aj S?kowski, a Polish diplomat and secretary to Queen Anna Jagiellon. Before the appearance of this Spanish version, S?kowski had published in Naples a Latin digest of Kromer's work under the title Regni Poloniae brevis et compendiosa descriptio (1582). This Madrid edition offers a concise, systematic account of Poland for Spanish readers "who have little direct knowledge of that realm," as noted in the preface. The book condenses Polonia into a structured survey of the kingdom in thirteen chapters. It opens with the origins and name of the Poles, followed by accounts of the land, provinces, cities, rivers, and natural resources. Subsequent sections describe agriculture, forests, and animals, while the later chapters turn to society and government-outlining the character of the Polish nation, its rulers, senate, nobility, assemblies, and political order. The Spanish version, updated with territorial and administrative changes following Stephen Báthory's Russo-Polish war, appeared posthumously under the patronage of Girolamo Lippomano, Venetian ambassador to Spain and S?kowski's friend. Although the translation was attributed to S?kowski, contemporary testimony by Antonio de Herrera indicates that it was completed by Pedro Simón Abril following S?kowski's death in 1587 (Kowalczyk, 2019). It was also, as Sabik (1982) observed, one of the earliest instances of a Polish author publishing in Castilian, illustrating the reach of Spanish linguistic and cultural influence in Central Europe. Miko?aj S?kowski (also Nicolai Secovio or Nicolaus Secovius, ca. 1545-1587) was a Polish diplomat and writer active in Italy and Spain. As secretary to Queen Anna Jagiellon, he represented Polish interests in Naples and Madrid, using his literary and scholarly work to advance Polish diplomacy. In 1576 he contributed Latin and Italian verse to In funere Sigismundi Augusti Regis Poloniae (Venice), his poems being the earliest known examples of Italian-language poetry by a Polish author. He also corresponded with Abraham Ortelius, providing geographical information later reflected in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. His work exemplifies early cultural diplomacy, promoting a favourable image of Poland abroad (Kowalczyk, 2019). It thus represents an early instance of cultural diplomacy in Spanish-Polish relations, framing the work both as an adaptation of Kromer's humanist history and as a deliberate presentation of Poland to a Spanish audience (Kowalczyk, 2020). Exceptionally rare. Although no details about the edition are known, it seems to have been rather limited (Kowalczyk, 2019). Rare first edition of Llwyd's geographical and historical description of Ancient Britain prefixed by his farewell letter to the cartographer Abraham Ortelius dated from Denbigh 30 August 1568, ending with a short Welsh vocabulary. An English translation by Thomas Twyne, 'The Breuiary of Britayne,' was published in the following year. "in August 1568, the Welsh scholar Humphrey Lloyd of Demby lay dying. Writing for the last time to his friend Abraham Ortelius in Antwerp, he reported that 'a very perilous fever hath so torn this body of mine these ten continual days that I [have been] brought to despair of my life.' Along with the letter Llwyd enclosed a pair of maps, one of Wales and one of England and Wales, destined for inclusion in Ortelius's atlas. Llwyd further enclosed 'certain fragments written with mine own hand which (if God had spared me life) you should have received in better order, These 'fragments' belonged to an unfinished topographical description of Britain, more than half of which was devoted to the history and description of Wales Humphrey Llwyd was among the most gifted and provocative scholars of his generation.
