[++] "The mass of a body is included in the equations of motion and gravity, and it has been assumed since the time of Newton that these two masses (inertial and gravitational) are one and the same. However, this assumption was not tested by experiment until Hungarian physicist Loránd Eötvös did so in 1885 and then again (with greater precision) in 1919. This was sufficiently accurate for Albert Einstein to use this equivalency in his formulation of general relativity. More than 40 years later, P. G. Roll, R. Krotkov and R. H. Dicke conducted a similar experiment with much greater precision to confirm the equivalence to within one in 100 billion. Dicke suggests (tongue-in-cheek) a very very long historical background of the experiment, perhaps leading back to the paleolithic.
