Covers age tanned, 1/2 x 1 inch chip off side edge of rear cover, 1 inch chip off upper corner of front cover, 1/2 inch chip off lower corner, three approximately 2 inch tears and several lesser tears and chips along edges of covers, with some stray smudging. Internally, text paper age tanned, an approximately 1/2 inch deep x 8 inch long light tan stain on top edge of last few leaves, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked and apparently never read, with colors still sharp. Mimeograph from the work published by Verlag von Veit & Company of the match between Siegbert Tarrasch and Jacques Mieses Siegbert Tarrasch defeated Jacques Mieses (+7 -2 =4) in Berlin in their match of 1916; prize was half pound of butter. Siegbert Tarrasch was a German chess player, considered to have been among the strongest ones, and one of the most influential chess theoreticians of the late 19th and early 20th century. Tarrasch may have been the best player in the world in the early 1890s. He scored heavily against the ageing World Champion Wilhelm Steinitz in tournaments (+3−0=1) but refused an opportunity to challenge Steinitz for the world title in 1892 because of the demands of his medical practice. Jacques Mieses (1865-1954) was a German-born British chess player. He was one of the inaugural recipients of the title International Grandmaster from FIDE in 1950. His early successes as an adult chess player included a tie for second at Leipzig and third at Nuremberg in 1888. However, he was quickly eclipsed by two rising young superstars, Emanuel Lasker and Siegbert Tarrasch. Mieses attained maturity as a player in 1895, just after turning 30, when he contested the 9th Chess Congress in Leipzig, followed by an exhibition tour in Russia and then a match with David Janowski. His participation in the great Hastings tournament that year was important to his growth as a mature chess master despite a 20th-place finish. When FIDE first awarded the grandmaster title in 1950, Mieses was one of the 27 original recipients, and the oldest of them. Condition: Pages age toned, staple holes in margin gutter else very good.
