Der Spreewald ist mit seinen zahlreichen Fließen und Kanälen, den angrenzenden Wiesen und Weiden und den besonders im Unterspreewald noch vorhandenen, naturnahen, zusammenhängenden, großflächigen Waldbeständen eine für Mitteleuropa einmalige Niederungslandschaft. Im Zentrum befindet sich das 1990 ausgewiesene, 475 Quadratkilomet…er große Biosphärenreservat Spreewald. Neben diesem wurden in die Florabeschreibungen auch östlich und westlich angrenzende Randgebiete einbezogen. Somit hat das Florengebiet eine Gesamtgröße von ca. 740 Quadratkilometer. Insgesamt 1227 wild wachsende Pflanzensippen (incl. verwilderter Kulturpflanzen) sind bis heute im Florengebiet festgestellt worden. Die von ihnen besiedelten Lebensräume und ihre historischen sowie aktuellen Vorkommen werden, z. T. detailliert, dargestellt. Darüber hinaus werden die im Spreewald verwendeten deutschen und niedersorbisch-wendischen Pflanzennamen aufgeführt. Ergänzt wird dies durch eine tabellarische Auflistung von 597 Sippen, die auf den Feldern, in den Gärten, Parks und Anlagen des Spreewalds als Zier- und Nutzpflanzen kultiviert werden. Von diesen sind 142 Arten unter den im Florengebiet auch wildwachsenden Sippen integriert. Rangsdorf.
