This book is a catalog of his artworks from that period, a time when Japan sought to establish a post-war self-representation as a country of Western values and welcoming to foreigners. While his practice aligns with the era of Gutai and Mono-ha, Shima garnered less success. He gained recognition for founding the avant-garde art collective "Group Han'' and for a notable project involving stamping 10,000 stones and returning them to the ocean. Rare. Kuniichi Shima [Japanese 1935-] Painter and print maker, born in Tokyo and graduated from Tama Art University. He helped to establish the Group Han in 1958. He exhibited regularly with the Han Group and won prizes for his print making including at the Krakow International Print Biennial amongst others. In 1980 he studied in the United States for a year.
