Add to basketA scarce survival of the Kuomintang's activities in Europe in the 1920s, during which young Chinese revolutionaries such as Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping studied in France under the party's aegis. WorldCat shows no institutional holdings of issues from before the late 1930s. The Kuomintang's French branch was established in 1894 to raise the international profile of Sun Yat-Sen and the early republican cause. In light of the 1927 Shanghai Massacre, in which Chiang Kai-Shek ordered attacks on communist cells in Shanghai, this issue is focused on attacking Chen Shunong and other left-wing students in the party. Chen was expelled from the Kuomintang in 1929. Bifolium (page size 560 x 385 mm). Text in Chinese with a little French. Mimeographed across all pages, folded horizontally as issued. Later vertical fold, paper brittle with couple of consequent closed tears: very good.

A detailed, folding, black and white lithograph map centred on Taiwan, Fujian and Zhejiang, published in Kuomintang-controlled Taiwan at the zenith of the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis of 1958. Scale of 1:1,000,000. Divided into 16 panels, measuring 108.5 x 76.5cm. One panel heavily soiled, tears at two folds with a little loss to image and some other minor chipping and closed tears along margins, now reinforced with archival washi. Although showing signs of heavy use in places, this scarce map stands as a fascinating glimpse into a little-known aspect of the ongoing dispute between Mainland China and the exiled republican government in Taiwan. A particularly interesting map of the Taiwan Strait marking localities, road and rail connections, and place names in Traditional Chinese, transcribed in Wade-Giles and translated to English. Of special note is the marking of distances in nautical miles (given as ?) between islands of strategic importance along the coast, relative to Taiwan's major ports of Kaohsiung and Keelung - presumably due to their relevance as points of embarkation for Nationalist invasion forces. Accompanying some of the islands are comments indicating their longitude and latitude, as well as their prominent geographic features, likely for the edification of those planning an engagement. The presence of English place names may indicate that the map was partially prepared with more direct American involvement in the conflict in mind.

Colour Kuomintang poster featuring five angry people at the top of the poster, one with a sharp knife at the ready, gazing down at the warlord ??? [Zhang Zuolin] (lower edge). Some creasing, two small spots on reverse one of which is visible on the left margin, very minor light soiling and wear, good. Text in traditional Chinese. Sheet measures 79 x 27.2cm. Zhang Zuolin (1875-1928), the founder of the Fengtian Clique of the Beiyang Army opposed all other warlord military factions. In the years between 1916 and 1928 his Fengtian Army controlled Manchuria (now Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning Provinces). In November 1926 an alliance between the Fengtian and Zhili factions was formed to counter the advances of the National Revolutionary Army's Northern Expedition. Zhang was appointed as the Generalissimo of the last Beiyang (Peiyang) government in 1927. During the Northern Expedition, the Kuomintang publicly accused Zhang as a national traitor in league with Japan. Ironically, Zhang was assassinated by the Japanese army in ??? [Huanggutun] on 4 June 1928.
