In 1931-1935 she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. When WWII broke, she worked in Pomerania as a nurse. After resettlement to Krakow, she found employment as office and technical assistance in the Water Management Office. There, she set up a secret information and intelligence unit. The Gestapo arrested her in May 1941. After interrogation in the Montelupich prison and a stay in the Helclów Institution in Kraków, she was transferred, in April 1942, to Auschwitz as a political prisoner. In Auschwitz, Janina Tollik worked in many various work Komandos, including the penal company, where she began to sketch, and also painted watercolors, of various scenes at the camp. She destroyed many of them, thinking no one would ever see them. In October 1944, she was sent in an evacuation transport to KL Flossenbürg in Bavaria, where she lived to see liberation. In 1945-1949 she was in Belgium, receiving treatment, studying and working. In 1949, she returned to Poland.
