The purpose of this paper was to study those early years of the twentieth century in Tuolmne County. What were the needs for railroads in different industries and enterprises in the county and what was their importance to those industries? And what was the impact of railroads on the economic development of the county? Railroads came late to the county. The first was not built until 1897. A short line named the Sierra Railway and it was soon followed by a number of others. 126 pages, printed rectos only, with signatures of the Department Chairman and Thesis Committee on special page. Chapters on mining and minerals, lumber, water and hydroelectricity, and other industries. Included are maps, A foldout map of the Sierra Railroad, graphs, foldout of Sierra Railway Freight Traffic, table of gold production in Tuolumne and nearby counties, list of Sierra Nevada lumer mills, and bibliography.
