Ephemera. Condition: Very good. A commercial studio portrait of two Newhaven fish wives, the women who gutted and prepared fish and hauled the results to market in the village of Newhaven, just north of Edinburgh. The fish women were popular subjects for painters and photographers because of their distinctive vertically striped…dresses. This image shows two women, one standing wearing a basket on her back and the other seated with a basket on the ground. The standing woman appears to be putting a coin in the hand of the other woman. Both women are wearing the striped dresses that were typical of women working in the fishing industry in Newhaven. The photographer operated at the address on the back of the mount (36 Regent Street, Portobello, near Edinburgh) from 1865 to 1870, according to the Edinphoto website. Occupational carte de visite photograph; image, 2-1/2 by 3-5/8 inches. Stiff card mount, 2-1/2 by 4-1/16 inches, with photographer's mark on the back. A very good image. Good contrast and tonal range.
