Seit 1880 als Assistent am Institut für Experimentelle Pathologie tätig, habilitierte er sich im selben Jahr und wurde 1887 a.o., 1890 o.Prof. der allgemeinen und experimentellen Pathologie an der Univ. Innsbruck. Loewit beschäftigte sich zunächst mit der Hämatologie, insbesondere der Leukämie, und prägte den Terminus "Leukopänie". In späteren Jahren wandte er sich der immunologischen Forschung zu. 1892 erschienen seine Studien zur Physiologie und Pathologie des Blutes und der Lymphe. (DBE).

"Die ersten Arbeiten auf diesem Gebiete bezogen sich zunächst auf die zwar schon lange bekannten, aber erst 1878 durch Hayems Untersuchungen genauer studierten Blutplättchen deren Existenz im strömenden Blute Loewit (wie übrigens auch Weigert und Lilienfeld) leugnete und die er für ausgefälltes Globulin des Plasmas, später wenigstens teilweise (so wie Arnold und Schwalbe) für Abkömmlinge roter Blutkörperchen hielt. Ebenso leugnete er entgegen Eberth und Schimmelbusch ihre funktionelle Gleichwertigkeit mit den Spindelzellen des Froschblutes und stützte gegenüber Hayem und Bizzozzero, die den Plättchen die Hauptrolle bei der Blutgerinnung zuschrieben, die von Alexander Schmidt experimentell begründete Lehre von der Beteiligung der Leukozyten am Gerinnungsvorgang. Wenn auch Loewits Aufstellungen über die Natur und Abstammung der Blutplättchen sich späterhin als irrig erwiesen, so muß demgegenüber bedacht werden, wie ungemein schwierig dieses Problem ist, das auch heute noch keine allgemein anerkannte Beantwortung gefunden hat. - In seinen "Studien zur Physiologie und Pathologie des Blutes und der Lymphe" stellte er eine neue Theorie der infektiösen Leukozytose auf, die eine wichtige Stufe in der Entwicklung unserer Erkenntnis über diesen so bedeutsamen Abwehrprozeß darstellte; wenn auch durch Goldscheider und Jacob*) die Auffassung Loewits, daß die von Loewit beobachtete, nach Injektion von Bakterienstoffen eintretende initiale Leukozytenverminderung die Leukozytose auslöse, als irrig bezeichnet wurde, so blieb seine Lehre doch in zwei Hauptpunkten bis zum heutigen Tage in Geltung: nämlich hinsichtlich der Aufstellung, daß die im Blute auftretende Leukozytenvermehrung eine tatsächliche, und nicht, wie Jacob behauptet hatte, eine scheinbare sei und dann hinsichtlich der Feststellung, daß diese Vermehrung in den Bildungsstätten erfolge, während Buchner und Roemer eine Vermehrung in der Blutbahn angenommen hatten.
