Louis-François Beffara (1751-1838) était un commissaire de police particulièrement actif pendant la Révolution et qui employa ses loisirs, pendant plus de cinquante ans, à faire des recherches sur l'histoire du théâtre, tant en France qu'à l'étranger. Il s'est particulièrement attaché à recueillir des renseignements sur Molière, à qui il voua une véritable passion. Cet opuscule constitue un jalon important dans la connaissance de la vie de l'illustre comédien puisqu'il s'agit de sa première biographie "scientifique", basée sur des recherches méthodiques comme peuvent l'être celles d'un officier de police. Il contient notamment la première publication de la véritable date de naissance de Molière. Les archives réunies par Beffara furent léguées à sa mort à la ibliothèque de la ville de Paris. Il avait laissé plusieurs ouvrages manuscrits "pleins de renseignements précieux sur l'histoire théatrâle, sur les théâtre lyriques, sur les librettistes et compositeurs d'opéras, balletsn, divertissements, sur les acteurs, danseurs et musiciens attachés aux orchestres" (Larousse). Restés inédits, il furent consommés pendant la Commune de Paris dans les flammes de l'incendie de l'Hôtel de Ville (24 mai 1871). Exemplaire portant la mention manuscrite suivante sur le faux-titre: "Exemplaire de présent à moi adressé par l'auteur, M. Beffara, le 23 février 1829". Albert Goyecque in: "Revue d'histoire du théâtre", IV, p.444: "Sans Beffara, nous ne connaîtrions rien de Molière".
