Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt, 2010. 150p. Hardbound. (Publisher's information).…

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Hard cover 8vo (18.5 cm) in a near-contemporary Italian laced vellum parchment binding over board, with yapp edges, the board double-ruled to the border in old ink, with title handwritten in same to the spine, with remnants of additional ruling and the year 1674 to the foot. Five laces are visible to the joint. Text block edges are stained black. Text in Latin. [1], [16] 588pp., [108pp.], 46pp., [3]. With engraved figural headers and decorated capitals. The engraved title page by Dutch artist CORNELIUS VAN DALEN(1638-1664) features the book title upon the face of an architectural plinth, atop which sits a statue or figure of a helmeted woman, presumed to be Rhea Silvia, the Vestal Virgin mother of Rome's founding twin brothers Romulus and Remus, seen at the base of a pyramidal grouping of figures being suckled by the famous she-wolf, while their father Mars looks on. This founding story of Rome is in Book I, Chapter One. Extensive Notes to this first century work of LUCIUS ANNÆUS FLORUS 's (70BC-149AD) famous history of the Roman Empire are provided by the French humanist scholar, C.L. SALMASII, (Claude Saumaise), multi-lingual Professor at the University of Leiden (circa 1631) during the days of the protestant Reformation. His commentary was first published by Amsterdam printers DANIEL and LUDOVIC ELZEVIR in 1638. Saumaise used Roman Historian LUCIUS AMPELIUS's "Liber Memorialis" (circa third century) as a source. (Didbin) and a section of the work is included here. **CONDITION: Very Good antiquarian condition. Cracked front inner hinge, rear hinge in order. Firmly bound and square. Text may have been trimmed at time of binding but no resultant loss noted. Two bits of wrinkling of vellum near foot of spine seem discolored only. Minor bump to lower front corner. Moderate discoloration or staining to the vellum affecting approximately the lower third of the boards. Some fading to the ink ruling to the spine. Notes and some names to front endpapers. Minor reader annotation to margins and some underlining, both in old ink. Quite minor foxing or other scattered soiling to interior pages; photos are representative.**Ref: CERL Thesaurus for all authors. T. Didbin, 1827 (Martino Publishing), see note to 1638 Salmasii edition, Vol. 2, p. 10. (AMJ). C.V. Dalen (illustrator). Book.…
