Soft cover. Condition: Fair. The editor of this weekly 32-page magazine, published in Kansas City, had been arrested the week before, on April 30, 1915, and charged with obscenity for his fourth issue, which would have been published in early April. "The publication was filled with rottenness from cover to cover," said the prosecutor, according to a contemporary news account. "It is not fit for anyone to read, yet it has been placed in the hands of youth to sell." In this issue, Claypool declares himself "not guilty!" of publishing "so-called smut." He goes on to write about Leo Frank, Minneapolis/St. Paul, theatrical productions, revivals, saloons, Goethe and nursing babies. The charges were dropped after Claypool promised a judge on May 21 that he would cease publication and admitted he had "made a mistake and would never do it again." Soon after, he launched Claypool's Weekly with an attack on the police chief in Kansas City, Kansas, who immediately had all copies seized and destroyed on the Kansas side. Copies of The Padded Hammer are scarce; the University of Missouri has issues 3, 4 and 5. It is not clear if there was a No. 8 on May 15 or if this was the last issue.
