Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. An unusually charming wartime-era American children's craft manual, created around the principle that imaginative objects could be made inexpensively from paper, cardboard, scissors, paste, and ordinary household or classroom materials. Its remarkably broad assortment includes paper beads and jewelry, masks, hats and costumes, toys, dolls and doll furniture, papier-mache animals, greeting cards, Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations, Christmas trees and snowflakes, Valentine's and Easter projects, Mother's and Father's Day gifts, posters, stained-glass window designs, lampshades, handmade bowls, book jackets, and much more. The book's bold full-page diagrams are particularly attractive examples of 1940s instructional graphic design. A contemporary advertisement described it as a book intended to give children creative experience using principally paper and cardboard and emphasized its large, full-page instructional charts. Newkirk is identified on the title page as Director of the Bureau of Industrial Arts Education, Chicago Public Schools, while Zutter is identified as a commercial illustrator and former Chicago Public Schools arts-and-crafts teacher. The foreword is by Chicago Public Schools superintendent William H. Johnson. Especially striking are the blue-and-cream pictorial endpapers, filled with children, toys, flowers, animals, paper decorations, houses, and holiday motifs - a delightful visual encapsulation of the book's contents. An educational bibliography later described the book as a general craft manual for children from the primary through upper-elementary grades and confirmed its 214-page extent. This appears to be the First Edition / first printing of 1944. The copyright page carries only "Copyright, 1944 / By Silver Burdett Company", with no indication of an earlier edition or subsequent printing. More importantly, the U.S. Copyright Office's contemporary Catalog of Copyright Entries records You Can Make It by Louis V. Newkirk and La Vada Zutter as copyrighted January 6, 1944, registration A178055. Very Good Condition. Original blue cloth with gilt cover and spine decoration. Binding remains sound and square, with moderate rubbing, spotting and handling wear to cloth, some dulling/fading along spine and extremities, and light wear at corners and spine ends. Gilt remains quite attractive, particularly on the front board. Interior complete and generally clean, with expected age-toning and occasional minor spotting/handling evidence. The wonderful blue-and-cream pictorial endpapers remain bright and particularly well preserved. No markings found, and importantly for a working craft book, the illustrated patterns and project pages shown appear uncut and unused. There is a particularly interesting historical context here. This was published during World War II, when inexpensive, readily available materials were an especially practical premise for children's crafts. The authors repeatedly emphasize scraps, wrapping paper, magazines, cardboard, paste, and simple tools rather than specialized supplies. Silver Burdett's own contemporary advertisement likewise stressed that projects used paper and cardboard and tools already found in the classroom. La Vada Zutter (illustrator).…
