Full leather. 12mo. Full leather boards with raised bands. Marbled end papers. Very light foxing throughout. Boards are worn and scuffed, board edges very chipped and worn. Spine is cracked and badly worn. Edges of spine are chipped, scuffed and curling so that the binding cord is exposed. Bottom right corner of leather is chipped, and has some indications of book worming. Back board is missing 2 small pieces of the leather and boards, about 1/2 cm. Some curling along corners. Brown marble decorative endpapers. Frontispiece drawing of L'Abbé Fénélon with a group of children. A comparison of Jewish and Christian practices by Abbé Claude Fleury, a leading early 18th century French cleric and the confessor to Louis XV. The vast majority of Fleury's section on Judaism deals with biblical Israel, with a brief discussion at the end as to how post biblical Judaism degenerated into Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes before moving on to Christianity, which Fleury saw as the true heir to the biblical religion. His understanding of Judaism came largely from the Bible, Josephus, Church fathers such as Origen, Tertullian and Clement of Alexandria and Johannes Buxtorf the Elder. Text in French.
