En 1909-1910, le commandant Henri de Bouillane de Lacoste (1867-1937) s'engage dans les steppes mongoles à la tête d'une vaste expédition scientifique. Bouillane de Lacoste est accompagné par Zabieha, agent en Asie centrale de la maison de fourrure Revillon, dont il a su apprécier les compétences. Se joint aussi à lui un médecin, Du Chazaud, plus particulièrement chargé des travaux de sciences naturelles. Le ministère de l'Éducation publique, la Société de géographie et le Muséum sont les principaux commanditaires de l'expédition. Un de leurs soucis est de conserver intact le souvenir d'une civilisation, d'un mode de vie appelé à disparaître, et propre à cette "terre des Herbes" encore préservée. L'expédition emprunte des routes inconnues et localise de nouveaux sites archéologiques, comme le lac de Gandan-Nûr. À son tour, le massif du Telmen-Nûr est exploré avant l'arrivée à Uliasutaï, capitale de la Mongolie extérieure. Après plus de trois mille kilomètres à pied ou à dos de chameau, l'expédition rejoint Novosibirsk, la plus proche station du Transsibérien : les documents et les objets qu'ils rapportent vont susciter un grand intérêt dans la communauté scientifique.
