La première suite est gravée sur bois et tirée sur papier vélin blan satiné. La deuxième suite est gravée sur acier et tirée sur papier vélin blanc mat. Texte imprimé en petits caractères sur deux colonnes. Reliure strictement de l'époque plein chagrin vieux rouge, dos à nerfs, dentelle dorée en encadrement intérieur, doublures et gardes de papier peigne, toutes tranches dorées (reliure signée GAUBERT E.). Reliures fraîches et de belle facture. Intérieur frais malgré quelques rousseurs (notamment au verso blanc des gravures sur acier). Collationné complet. Texte entièrement en anglais. Premier tirage. Intéressante édition compacte donnée par le libraire parisien Baudry en 2 volumes grands in-8 et contenant l'intégralité des 37 pièces de Shakespeare et un important appareil critique composé de notes historiques et diverses notices. Nous avons compté 42 gravures sur acier (y compris un portrait de l'auteur) et 38 figures sur bois (y compris un titre intitulé "Illustrations to the Works of W. Shakespeare". Nombreuses vignettes gravées sur bois tirées dans le texte (culs-de-lampe). Les gravures sur acier sont de Ch. Geoffroy, Audibran, Joubert, Gouttière, Lestudier Lacour, Rouargue, Contenau, Varin, etc. Les bois gravés sont de divers artistes également, notamment Geoffroy, Laisné, etc. On trouve en tête du premier volume une "Life of Shakespeare by A. Chalmers" ainsi que la Préface de Pope ainsi que celle du Dr. Johnson. A la suite se trouve "An Historical account of the english stage by Mr. Malone", et divers autres textes sur la personne et l'oeuvre de William Shakespeare. On retrouve l'intégralité du théâtre de William Shakespeare. Provenance : reliure au chiffre B C couronné (vicomte) poussé à froid sur le premier plat de chaque volume (non identifié). Très bel exemplaire finement relié plein cuir à l'époque pour un aristocrate français et enrichi de deux suites d'illustrations. Très rare dans cette condition. Ch.
