Cwm notis Antonii Thysii, published by Lugduni Batavorum Leffen, 1652. Presumed 1st Edition Thus. 670pp + indices. Steel engraved frontispiece and page headings. Internally Very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate or inscription, pale easily erasable pencil underlining to prelims to pp16, note of editions handwritten in ink and dated 1715 to lower endpaper, no further marks of any kind, well held in joints and hinges, remarkably free from foxing or browning. Beautifully bound in white vellum leather stitched to joints, French yapped to fore-edges and with handwritten author and date black ink; 'Lactanttius 1652'. Lusius Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius 250-325, was born a Pagan, became an early Chrisian apologist, was declared Professor of Rhetoric by emperor Diocletian before resigning and living in poverty, was subsequently reinstated to high office as Latin tutor to the son of Crispus, the latter becoming Caesar and being put to death by his father Constantine. The volume in hand contains all surviving works, and is beautifully bound in vellum, the same used for the Magna Carta and all laws in England. Only one Vellum maker remains in the UK. An increasingly uncommon Edition, bound in an increasingly uncommon material, by an increasingly sought after author. His works were copied in manuscript several times in the 15th century and were first printed in 1465 by the Germans Arnold Pannartz and Konrad Sweynheim at the Abbey of Subiaco, the first book printed in Italy to have a date of printing. It was probably the fourth book ever printed in Italy. A copy of this 1465 edition was sold at auction in 2000 for more than $1 million.

Hardcover. Condition: Gut. 8°.
