Sparks was also a prolific author, with this work being a detailed work regarding the works of early Christian author Lactantius. Lactantius is credited as being an important advisor to Roman emperor Constantine I, and was integral in shaping his religious policy. The work explores a number of his works including 'De Falsa Sapientia', a notable work regarding 'false wisdom'. Like many of Lactantius's contemporaries, the work is influenced by pagan and philosophical thought. 912 pages with 33 pages index.Text in latin.

This edition of A Relation of the Death of the Primitive Persecutors presents an English translation by Gilbert Burnet of Lactantius's polemic against Roman imperial opposition to Christianity. The narrative outlines the deaths of emperors such as Nero, Diocletian, and others regarded as enemies of the early Church. Burnet's translation emerged in a Protestant context and aligns with late 17th-century religious polemics. The text was published in a sextodecimo format and bound in original leather. The volume in hand contains all surviving works, and is beautifully bound in vellum, the same used for the Magna Carta and all laws in England. Only one Vellum maker remains in the UK. An increasingly uncommon Edition, bound in an increasingly uncommon material, by an increasingly sought after author. His works were copied in manuscript several times in the 15th century and were first printed in 1465 by the Germans Arnold Pannartz and Konrad Sweynheim at the Abbey of Subiaco, the first book printed in Italy to have a date of printing. It was probably the fourth book ever printed in Italy. A copy of this 1465 edition was sold at auction in 2000 for more than $1 million.

The first Aldine edition of Lacantius' Divine Institutes along with a selection of Tertullian's apologetics. Lactantius was the first dated book printed in Italy (at the Subiaco commune by Conradus Sweynheym and Arnoldus Pannartz). It is famous as the first sustained defense of Christianity against pagan attacks, for the quality of it's prose, Lactantius' shaky grasp of scripture, and a section mocking the idea of a round earth which was specifically mentioned by Copernicus in his introduction to De revolutionibus orbium coelestium ("For it is not unknown that Lactantius, the writer celebrated in other ways but very little in mathematics, spoke somewhat childishly of the shape of the earth when he derided those who declared the earth had the shape of a ball. So it ought not to surprise students if such should laugh at us also.") Provenance: armorial bookplate of Paui van de Woestijne "Gandavensis" (of Ghent). Nicola Perrarca (?) early signature to title. Franc. Presbyt. Bauchieri [] Theol. Dr.' to front flyleaf.A closely read copy of Lactantius's encyclopaedia of Christian apologetics, defending and explaining the Christian faith. Lactantius (c.250c.325), from north Africa, taught rhetoric at the imperial court in Nicomedia, where he witnessed the Christian persecutions of Diocletian. According to Jackson Bryce's online bibliography of Lactantius editions, this is probably the eighteenth printing of the works of Lactantius, following the first edition of 1465 (the first surviving book to be printed in Italy). This edition, however, contains more texts, including Lactantius's neo-Latin poem De ave phoenice about resurrection, John Chrysostom's De Coena Domini and Lorenzo Valla's sermon De mysterio Eucharistiae; the volume closes with Tertullian's Apologeticus adversus gentes which has separate foliation and its own colophon. The text was edited by Pierio Valeriano from Belluno (14771558), the nephew of the Greek scholar Urbano Bolzanio, through whom he became acquainted with Aldus Manutius. He studied in Padua and became increasingly interested in Egyptian hieroglyphics, and indeed the text of Lactantius includes much information about ancient Egypt. The annotations are concentrated on the sections of the Divine Institutes entitled 'De vera sapientia', 'De divino praemio' (elsewhere entitled 'De vita beata'), and chapter IX of 'De origine erroris'. Elsewhere there are a few marginal hash marks and single words, and some underlining of words and phrases. The annotator shows close engagement and understanding of the text, as well as giving his opinion; on D3vD4r he states that Lactantius has proved that materia prima was created by God, not the other way round. In the chapters on true wisdom (in which Lactantius states that philosophy is not wisdom) they cite many pagan authors, such as Pythagoras and Plato, Hermes Trismegistus and Cicero, whom Lactantius aimed to discredit (his aim was to demonstrate that before the recent history of polytheism, which began in Egypt, only one God was worshipped in the Mediterranean, which the annotator notes has been proved). The annotator also provides the sources of some of Lactantius's text, where not acknowledged by Lactantius himself; for example, on Q2v, he correctly identifies a reference to the first book of Ovid and some lines from Virgil's fourth Eclogue, and on Q3v mentions Aristippus. Along with Cyprian, Lactantius also believed that the end of the world was at hand; in 'De divino praemio' chapter XXV, the annotator has noted 'completo sexto millesimo anno, tunc erit finis mundi' (at the end of the sixth millennium, then it will be the end of the world), a common notion within the prolific genre of Apocalypse commentaries, frequently repeated with variants in the form. The annotator is writing a thousand years after that, thus revealing a predilection for the consciously metaphorical exegesis of millenialist statements. The annotator also complements Lactantius's notes on the Antichrist by referring to one of the numerous circulating interpretations of Daniel and Isaiah regarding his Syrian origins (Q3r). Later shelfmark "E" in brown ink on f. 1r, probably 19th century. A manuscript at the hinge-point between scribal and printed culture This is an unusually revealing and intellectually attractive late humanist manuscript of Lactantius, copied at a moment when the authority of the manuscript book had not yet yielded fully to print. Although written in 1472, seven years after the appearance of the 1465 Sweynheym and Pannartz edition at Subiaco ? the first dated book printed in Italy and the editio princeps of Lactantius ? the present codex is not merely a late manuscript witness to a classical text, but rather a rare and early document of how printed texts were themselves re-transmitted in manuscript form. The evidence for dependence on the 1465 edition is especially striking. Most notably, the colophon appears to be consciously adapted from that of the Sweynheym and Pannartz printing, with the date altered to 1472, suggesting that the manuscript was copied directly or indirectly from that printed exemplar or from a closely related descendant. This feature alone gives the manuscript unusual bibliographical interest, for it preserves the moment at which the language and authority of print are absorbed back into the conventions of scribal production. That relationship becomes even more compelling in the treatment of the Greek quotations. As in the earliest printed Lactantius tradition, the Greek text is here not fully resolved: spaces are left for a number of Greek passages, but these remain unfilled. This is highly significant. The handling of Greek in Lactantius ? both in manuscript and in print ? remains an understudied aspect of the text's transmission, and this codex belongs to a small and revealing group of late medieval and early Renaissance witnesses that expose the uncertainty surrounding the copying, availability, and authority of Greek passages in a primarily Latin scholarly environment. The point is of real historical interest. The 1465 Subiaco edition famously handled the Greek inconsistently, leaving blank spaces where suitable type or exemplar readings were lacking, while later editions, such as the 1468 Roman printing, offered a fuller Greek text. The present manuscript appears to stand precisely within that transitional zone: a scribal book produced in the first decade after the editio princeps, yet still bearing the textual scars of the earliest printed state.

Not only was the content important to Christian apologists, the style in which it was written gives a proper example of 4th-century Christian thought. While this work appears to be just a Christian apology, it also includes elements of civil law, including Lactantius's condemning the round earth theory, a view that Copernicus would refute in his 16th-century works. One of just two scholarly works published in the lifetime of English theologian and scholar Thomas Spark (1655-1692). As a clergyman of the Church of England Spark was admitted to a prebend in the church of Rochester a few years before his untimely death: "He died on 7 Sept. 1692 at Bath, whither he had gone to drink the waters" (DNB). His contemporaries attributed his death to "his excesses and too much Agitation obtaining Spiritualities" (Wood, "Ath. Oxon."). The present work is a scholarly edition of the works of early Christian theologian Lactantius (ca. 240-320 CE). Thomas Hearne, contemporary of Spark's, deemed it "a poor Performance, the Text being very incorrect, and the Notes from MSS. very mean, he having taken no pains to collate them accurately." Overall a reassuring reminder that shoddy scholarship has been around for a long time and can endure for centuries after the scholar's demise.
