Albert Ladenberg pioneered investigations of organic compounds of silicon and tin and advanced theories on the structure of aromatic compounds, but his chief contributions were the elucidation of the structure of alkaloids and their synthesis. In 1860 Ladenburg studied at Heidelberg, inspired by Bunsen's and Kirchhoff's lectures. DSB, VII, pp. 551-552.

This pamphlet is an important one that considers different possible structures for benzene, makes the case for Ladenburg s trigonal prism structure and calls attention to Kà rner s critical work on disubstitution isomers. This also appears to include the earliest use of ortho-, meta- and para- nomenclature for benzenes in the modern sense (see W.B. Jensen, Journal of Chemical Education 2006, Vol. 83, pp 356-7).
