Albert Ladenberg pioneered investigations of organic compounds of silicon and tin and advanced theories on the structure of aromatic compounds, but his chief contributions were the elucidation of the structure of alkaloids and their synthesis. This also appears to include the earliest use of ortho-, meta- and para- nomenclature for benzenes in the modern sense (see W.B. Jensen, Journal of Chemical Education 2006, Vol. 83, pp 356-7).
