A significant modern study of the particular mission to Poland of Claude de Mesmes, comte d'Avaux (15951650) -- one of France's leading diplomats. During the period covered by this volume, the Count worked towards an armistice between Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Treaty of Sztumska Wies. Much of the correspondence of Claude de Mesmes with various parties related to Poland and this treaty is transcribed in this volume. There is included also - "Journal de Charles Ogier Secretaire de l'Ambassade (17 mai, 1635 - 16 juin 1636) -- in Latin. Published as the first of a series from the Bibliothèque Polonaise -- "Documents relatifs aux rapports diplomatiques entre la France et la Pologne, 1." This copy has two US postage stamps issued to honor Ignace Jan Paderewski (4 cents and 8 cents) mounted to the title page, rubber-stamped "FIRST DAY OF ISSUE" / Town Hall, Krakow, Poland / with the round cancellation stamping: "Washington D.C. / Oct 8 / 9:00 A.M. - 1960."
