    Hardcover. Condition: f to vg. First edition. Miniature book (2 2/8 x 2"). 192pp. Original blind-stamped burgundy cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Engraved frontispiece. Vignette on title. Illustrated with twenty-seven mechanically reproduced woodcuts (including frontispiece), this charming tiny book is a collection of some of the most familiar Bible passages, from both the Old Testament and the New Testament. Beginning with the story of Creation and ending with Paul's preaching, the text is retold in simple words as it is intended for children. Binding stained and rubbed along edges. Gold lettering slightly faded on spine. Front hinge starting. Light water-staining to lower margin of pages throughout the second half of the book. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall fair, interior in good to very good condition.

Copyright 1834, but Adomeit judges it as circa 1850-75. 192 printed pages. 27 full-page woodcut engravings by the the father of American wood engraving, Alexander Anderson (1775-1870), known as the 'American Bewick'. One plate loose but present and in good condition. One old marginal crayon mark not affecting the text. 41 x 51mm. Original faded purple cloth, with embossed child's head on rear cover and "The Bible" within scrolling floral frame and borders with cornerpieces on front cover. "THE BIBLE" in gilt on spine in large capitals. This work is based upon the 1811 Samuel Wood 'Bible History', retold, and with personal interpretation. It has about 13,000 words and is one of the longest Thumb Bibbles known. It was written to stimulate interest in the Bible in a young readership and used clear, plain language and dynamic illustrations. Adomeit locates 5 copies although one is severley defective.
