Clever little children's book contains 11 classic stories & poems, some retold for young readers, lavishly illustrated throughout in full-color in mid-20th-century style by Violet LaMont.With a patent-pending design, both the front & back covers has a handle that is punched out & lifted above the fore edge side so that the book can be carried in a small reader's hand (see photos). In 30 pages, this is a FIRST EDITION, likely First Printing, from 1945, with government wartime paper regulation to copyright page. Condition is solidly Good: generally quite clean, with bright colors & unmarked pages, which show age-appropriate, moderate tanning. Spiral-bound heavy cardboard covers with elaborate illustrations both front & back. Wire is starting to come loose at bottom, but all pages are intact. Heavy rubbing to all corners, with loss at some down to the underlying boards (especially at lower edges). The handles are both intact but show some creasing & wear at folding edge. Orig. published in 1899, it later came under criticism amid charges of racism in both its story & illustrations. This edition restores the story to it's true Indian roots, with Sambo & his parents displayed with Indian features & dress. Published by Whitman in 1959, it is one in their series (#2661) of collectible Tell-a-Tale Books, small hardcovers with glossy decorative boards & no DJs (whole series like Little Golden Books). This is a slightly later printing of that First Edition, with $.39 price to front cover, but no zip code on address, so no later than 1962. Condition is Fine--appears never read!
