Photographic history of the Delaware and Lehigh Canals; the Lehigh lower section (the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company) ran along the Lehigh River from Mauch Chunk (present day Jim Thorpe) in the Pennslyvania anthracite coal region to Easton on the Delaware River; the Delaware Division ran from Easton along the western side of the Delaware River southward to Bristol. For many decades in the 19th and early 20th centuries, anthracite coal wasthe fuel of industrial America. Until the advent of railroads, the means of transport from the Pennsylvaia coal region to the industrial eastern cities of New York and Philadelphia as well as points in between, was by canal. The Delaware and Lehigh Navigation canals were built between 1818 and 1834 by Josiah White and Erskine Hazard.
