unbound. Condition: very good. Fine content typed carbon letter with original signature: "Will", 4to. 1 page, Paris, France, January 21, 1960, to Ernest Hemingway, while in Spain researching a series of bullfighting articles commissioned by Life Magazine. that would culminate into the project titled The Dangerous Summer, in part: ".Circumstances take me to New York next week. should you and or Mary chance to be in the big city during that period, I'd certainly like to hear from you. The trip is billed as a refresher course in the home office after 18 months abroad, but in less polite circles its known simply as brainwashing. Recently I sent a letter to Bill Davis and a similar request to John Blashill in Madrid, concerning photos for possible illustration of the first half of your Life article. We have our own coverage of last August to illustrated the second half, but many in the first half may present some problems. I recall that you said some of your own photo files were left with Bill, which is why I addressed myself to him on the matter. Along the lines, might you or any Cuban agency have anything on the visit made to your finca by Dominquin some years back? I've asked Bill, which is why I addressed myself to him on the matter. I've asked both Bill and Blashill to see if any photos exist on your visit to Dominguin at his Villa Paz, although I doubt that any such exist. But a shot of the two of you together in relaxed surroundings would help reinforce first impressions you record in the first half of the mms. Any such photos you find can be mailed to Ralph Graves, Text Editor, Life. I'm curious to know results of Antonio and Miguel's advertised mano-amono in Colombia over the Christmas holidays, if it came off. Blashill, who's visiting Paris now, saw Miguel before he left for S.A., and was told that the knee still was not behaving well, that docs had not even let him exercise properly before departure. Our Life en Espanol people in New York will undoubtedly have the box score on results when I arrive. The most recent issue of the New Yorker received here includes a full page ad featuring a martini and Barnaby Conrad. Only the Christian in me deters me from including the tearsheet." *In reality, at the time this letter was written, the project was not going very well and Hemingway was out of control. He was unable to organize his writing for the first time in his life and he was described by friends as being: "unusually hesitant, disorganized, and confused", suffering badly from failing eyesight. and mental illness. Incredibly, he was able to turn it all around and Life was able to publish his edited manuscript in a series of three illustrated installments in September 1960, to good reviews. Fine condition. American journalist and bureau head for Life Magazine, best remembered for the assistance he provided a very troubled Ernest Hemingway in the preparation and publication of 'The Dangerous Summer'.

unbound. Condition: very good. Fine content typed carbon letter with original signature: "Will", 4to. 1 page, c/o Time Inc, Rockefeller Center, New York City, September 20th 1960, just days after Life Magazine released the second installment of 'The Dangerous Summer', to Ernest Hemingway, providing him with the latest inside gossip concerning their project, in part: ".I have finally had the opportunity to read published installments of The Dangerous Summer. Very handsome. Very good. As much of it I had read before, and almost all of it we had talked over before. Yet I was delighted to be reassured that, for this reader, it had pace, it had interest, suspense, and a conclusion. I shouldn't be surprised, I know, yet that one familiar with the facts should still be surprised by them represents a considerable accomplishment for the authors. To paraphrase Hemingstein, the newspaper business is a tough town to play. A Time colleague of mine here, who knows and likes bullfights, pointed out that what he particularly enjoyed was the side play having to do with the ring, as your account of partnership with Ordonez in mining, hotel, and other properties, etc. I can thus appreciate the wisdom of keeping in those touches, as you explained while going over the suggested cuts to Suecia. The one surprising new item was your wired transcript in the third installment. I was dismayed to read about the injury to Antonio's right arm, and his tossing at Bilbao. That he should continue to fight despite these accidents is amazing - save you and me. I trust that he is okay now. Rupert Belville called me today, and I am having lunch with him tomorrow. He reports going recently to Arles to see Antonio fight, and being told by him that you were still in Spain. Any possibility of you leaving by way of Paris? Louise and I would be delighted to see you again. Best to Anne and Bill and, again, congratulations on the wonderful 'Summer', even though it did louse up your winter and spring. It was well worth it, says one who was unsalted by the sweat that went into it." *At the time Lang wrote this letter to Hemingway, the latter was already seriously ill and believed himself on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Feeling lonely, he took to bed for days, retreating into silence, despite having the first installments of 'The Dangerous Summer' published in Life to good reviews. In October, he left Spain for New York, where he refused to leave Mary's apartment, presuming that he was being watched. By November he was being treated at the Mayo Clinic, where he would eventually be subjected to electroconvulsive therapy as many as 15 times in December, and was eventually 'released in ruins' in January 1961. Six months later he would end his life by committing suicide. Usual folds, otherwise in fine condition. American journalist and a bureau head for Life Magazine, best remembered for the assistance he gave to a very troubled Ernest Hemingway in the preparation and publication of 'The Dangerous Summer'.

unbound. Condition: very good. Historically important typed carbon letter with original signature: "Will", 4to, 2 pages, April 15th 1960, to Ernest Hemingway, Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, concerning the progress Hemingway is making on a series of articles commissioned by Life Magazine, in part: ". I received your letter and the copy you sent to Ed Thompson, just before leaving for a week in London . which is why I haven't written before now. However, I did make a point of dropping a note from Ed that he did agree to the extra payment and delivery date. So everybody is happy all around, save perhaps the happy warrior of Finca Vigia who probably hasn't gone so many rounds in a long time in finishing off an opponent. Your mention of a 40,000 work published piece may be a happy suggestion in more ways than price alone; Life can now plan for publication of an article of definite length. On this matter I do hope you send Ed Thompson and Ralph Graves the entire article and let them select the 40,000 they like best. This is a psychological thing, between you and me for I feel they would be flattered to read the whole mss, and eventually completely satisfied that they are getting the mostest bangs for their bucks. Any cuts to be made would be made by pros and, of course, in full consultation with you. Thompson forwarded your work sheets to me, as you suggested, and I am impressed as he must have been. The fighters themselves may live more dangerously, but they certainly don't work harder. Incidentally, it was kind of you to mention that you would have sent the renegotiation letter through me but for the time involved. From now on in, it's probably better if you handle things directly with New York . as its New York's money involved, not mine - unfortunately. However, I stand ready to help should you ever need an interpreter. Delighted to hear that Mary's arm is progressing nicely." Over the years, Hemingway scholars have speculated about what transpired between Life magazine and the author that enabled them to salvage the above project. The official version reads as follows: "In mid-1959 Hemingway visited Spain to research a series of bullfighting articles commissioned by Life magazine. He was unable to organize his writing for the first time in his life, so he asked A.E. Hotchner to travel to Cuba to help him. Hotchner helped him trim the Life piece down to 40,000 words and Scribner's agreed to a full-length book version (The Dangerous Summer) of almost 130,000 words. Hotchner later revealed that he found Hemingway to be "unusually hesitant, disorganized and confused" and suffering badly from failing eyesight and mental illness. Fine condition. American journalist and a bureau head for Life Magazine, best remembered for the assistance he gave to a very troubled Ernest Hemingway in the preparation and publication of 'The Dangerous Summer'.
