Bemme (1775-1841) was a Dutch etcher. Bemme was apprenticed to his father, the goldsmith and medal engraver, Adriaan Jansz. Bemme (1753-1831) and later studied in Rotterdam under the portraitist, August Christian Hauck, as well as the better-known painter and draughtsman, Dirk Langendijk. After his father died, Bemme moved to The Hague, where he worked mostly as a medal maker, although he also had a sideline as a reproductive engraver.Biography artist: Dirk Langendijk (1748-1805), written as Langendyk in his day, was a Dutch draughtsman, painter and etcher. He produced mainly depictions of land and sea battles and other military scenes from the Dutch "Patriottentijd" (circa 1780-1800) and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (from 1792). Condition: good, given age. Light staining. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Aquarelle sur trait au crayon noir signé de Dirk Langendyk et daté de 1804, en bas à gauche.Peintre et dessinateur néerlandais, Dirk Langendynk (Rotterdam, 1748-1805).La carrière d'artiste de Langendijk se focalise rapidement sur les scènes militaires, déjà présentes dans ses premiers croquis de chevaux et de soldats entre 1769 et 1777. Il ne représente quasiment jamais des individus, mais presque exclusivement des groupes composés principalement de soldats, d'officiers et de chevaux. Il est à son époque très admiré pour ses représentations de chevaux lors des batailles. Il est rare que ses ?uvres soient datées comme c'est le cas ici.On trouve plusieurs de ses ?uvres dans des musées anglais et hollandais. Full Calf. Condition: Very Good. 8vo. Unpaginated, but 92 leaves, with an illustration covering about two-thirds of every recto, for a total of 92 illustrations of lives of the early Christians, with plenty of gore, torture, and gladiatorial action to make the blood curdle and speak to those with an aversion for the purely devotional. The imagery is well within the tradition of high Dutch Baroque and in this, transcends the subject matter or not infrequently, ties in the subject matter with contemporary Dutch life. Not in Brunet or Landwehr. Some occasional light foxing but mostly clean. Tight. Calf boards appear to have had a coat of shellac or the like slapped on at some point, rendering an appearance not unlike plywood. Spine has dryness and rubbing along joints. Spine label with small chip.

Rare first state of a plate with an autograph dedication in pencil by the engraver, Sansom to an unidentified Mr. Van der Pals. In the middle of the plate an empty oval frame where the artist drew horizontal lines for helping his handwritten annotation. The arms of the seven provinces of the Republic are placed above, below a curtain. On the bottom left is the personification of the Republic on a throne. Behind her stands Mercury, the god of commerce, next to the personification of Liberty. At the feet of Liberty is a cornucopia. From the right many representatives from other continents, bring gifts to the Dutch Maid; they come from Africa, America and Asia. Behind them the personification of shipping and the personification of Europe with a scepter and a helmet with a woman on a cow. This first state does not bear the usual engraved text characterizing later states: 'Uitgegeven by J. de Leeuw.' l Engraving and pencil on paper; plate mark: 338 x 253 mm, total: 398 x 314 mm.
