Fils d'un carbonaro italien réfugié en Angleterre, Dante Gabriel Rossetti étudie la peinture à la Royal Academy de Londres lorsqu'il rencontre ceux qui, avec lui, vont former la Confrérie préraphaélite: William Holman Hunt et John Everett Millais. Grâce à Coventry Patmore, ces " jeunes…gens en colère ", en rébellion contre les valeurs établies, reçoivent le soutien inattendu de John Ruskin qui, à trente-deux ans, est déjà le plus grand critique d'art de son époque. Au fil des ans, le groupe ne cessera de se renouveler, accueillant de nouveaux membres (Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris), des sympathisants (Swinburne, Meredith, Whistler), suscitant des admirations (Lewis Carroll, Oscar Wilde). Au centre de ce groupe dont il est le " patron " incontesté, Rossetti apparaît comme un être tourmenté, animé par une fièvre créatrice intense et fasciné par la mort. Le pur amour qui l'unit à sa compagne, Elizabeth Siddal, ne l'empêche pas de goûter à des passions plus charnelles: avec Fanny Cornforth et Jane Morris, ses modèles; mais aussi avec les prostituées de l'East End. Lorsqu'il se résout à épouser " Lizzie " Siddal, il est déjà trop tard. Minée par les soucis matériels du couple, rongée par la tuberculose, l'alcool et le laudanum, la jeune femme se suicide. Rossetti ne se remettra jamais de ce suicide dont il s'attribue la responsabilité. Les excès de toutes sortes ruinent sa santé. En 1870, la publication de ses poèmes lui vaut les plus vifs éloges, en même temps que les attaques féroces d'un establishment victorien qui lui reproche sa vie scandaleuse. Mais son déclin a déjà commencé. Lorsqu'il meurt, à cinquante-quatre ans, en pleine gloire, il n'est plus qu'une ombre à qui le chloral apporte un bref réconfort. Sa vie durant, il n'aura cessé d'osciller entre les tentations les plus extrêmes: le goût de l'absolu et l'attrait des bas-fonds, l'amour platonique et la déchéance sexuelle, le culte de l'amitié et la solitude la plus hautaine. Un siècle après sa mort, les troublants visages de femmes qu'il peignait et les transports mystiques qu'il confiait à l'écriture n'ont rien perdu de leur mystère.
