Scarce first edition 1823 Memoire with a later edition of the Essai, both with all plates. In 3/4 leather. Leather is scuffed and worn, spine is perished but most of the black spine label (Memoire et Essai) is present, boards are detached, first few blanks of the Memoire have dog ears, some light foxing throughout, a few pages are cut with rough edges at the bottom, one folding plate has some crisping and browning to a proud edge (not affecting the engraving). A quite wonderful book with beautiful engravings of stained glass windows in Rouen, many of which were moved (or destroyed) after this book was written. Langlois (1777-1837) was a celebrated French painter, draftsman, engraver and writer. He became known as the "Norman Callot" and he worked to study and preserve his Norman heritage. Hard to find.
