How much of Silvia's life is history, and how much is folklore, we cannot be sure, but it remains a fascinating view of slave life and the life of the uneducated free black in the North during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. 510 Pages. Printed in the phonetic type. This is a book of the author's reminiscences of teaching in Hunterdon County, NJ. The book's exterior has lightly worn areas on all four corners, worn spots at the upper right and left and lower right and left corners of the spine, some rubbing on the spine, and worn spots along the front cover. The interior book's main detriment is when bound, certain pages were omitted, specifically pages 105 - 112 and pages 281 - 288. Outside of this detriment, and some printer ink spots on a few pages, the book's interior has no further visible distractions/detriments and no visible extraneous markings. The bindings on this old book also remain tight and therefore are sound. Suppose you buy this book from us, it will be carefully wrapped up, padded, boxed, and mailed right off to you and will come with our absolute gratitude for your interest in the book and your order of it.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Original brown cloth. 124, [6 ads] pp., two plates. Small owner label front pastedown, hinges neatly strengthened, modest wear at the extremities of the boards, very good. In effect a narrative, Dr. Larison visited the reportedly 116-year-old formerly enslaved woman in her hut in the mountains of Hunterdon County, New Jersey and took down her extraordinary life story in her own words (and in his own phonetic spelling). The plates picture Sylvia and her primitive hut. Sylvia, incidentally, lasted several more years. Larison was an eccentric who printed his own idiosyncratic books in an outbuilding on his property, using phonetic spelling, and distributed the books himself. A splendid and uncommon narrative.
