Hardcover. Second Edition. Second edition after the one published in 1844, enlarged and containing the most complete account of the trial. 153, [2]pp. Errata slip tipped in. Quarter leather and dark red cloth, spine lettered in gold. One foldout map of the vicinity of the print works of A. & W. Sprague. Bound with the original printed wrappers. John Gordon was accused of the murder of wealthy Rhode Island businessman Amasa Sprague and sentenced to death; he was the last person to be executed in Rhode Island. Because of widespread bias and discrimination against Irish Catholics, many people questioned the justness of the trial and verdict. In fact, Gordon was pardoned by Governor Lincoln Chafee in 2011, more than 160 years after his death. Former library copy with a bookplate on the front pastedown, blind stamp on title page and number on page 3. Wrapper covers and front free endpaper are loose. The text block is mostly very clean with the exception of some stains affecting the lower half of the last few leaves and some corrections on the margins. A good+ copy. Uncommon.; Octavo.

No Binding. Condition: Good. Softcover, no binding, appears to have been taken from a larger volume or removed from its own binding, since the spine has the remains of leather. 44 pages & a large folding map. No title page - the first page present is the March 1844 Petition for a New Trial, followed by the map, then preface page (numbered 3/4) and Report of the Trial. Back side of the Petition page has a statement from the publisher apologizing for making such an effort to hurry this book to publication that the trial itself was not yet resolved, so the closing statements are not included here; and mentioned an omitted path of footprints on the map. Good condition. Pages still sewn and glued. The trial concerns the murder of Amasa Sprague, factory owner and well-to-do Rhode Islander, by brothers John and William Gordon, recently arrived from Ireland. The brothers were charged with beating Sprague to deal over the termination of the liquor license belonging to Nicolas Gordon. John Gordon was found guilty and he was hanged to death in 1845. He was the last person executed in Rhode Island. He was pardoned in 2011, in part because of the anti-Irish sentiment pervasive in the case. This is the first edition of the case-history & includes a detailed map that was not reproduced in then next (1884) edition. Scarce. Please email with questions or to request photos.
