Il s'agit de l'une des toutes premières publications quotidiennes de la presse de Province ("peut-être la première" ose avec prudence Labadie). Le journaliste Henri-Elisabeth Gaufreteau, l'auteur dramatique Clozanges (mort en 1785) et l'abbé Dupont des Jumeaux (précepteur des enfants de l'intendant Dupré de Saint-Maur) avaient obtenu le privilège de publier le "Journal de Guienne", aux dépens des "Annonces, Affiches et Avis divers" des frères Labottière. Le prospectus publié le 1er septembre 1784 précisait les buts : "Encourager le commerce et répandre les lumières parmi ceux qui l'exercent, tel doit être dans nos provinces maritimes le but des ouvrages périodiques"). Sur le frontispice de chaque numéro, on peut lire la dédicace au Maréchal de Mouchy, Mgr. Philippe de Noailles (bien qu'il eût cessé d'être lieutenant général de la province en 1785). Après un rappel de faits historiques en date anniversaire, on trouve dans chaque numéro l'indication des heures de marée à Bordeaux, les relevés météorologiques (d'avant-hier !) et surtout le détail de la construction, de l'armement, de la cargaison, de la destination et des heures de départ et d'arrivée des navires. Suivent le prix de diverses denrées (vin, pain, eaux-de-vie.) et une intéressante rubrique "d'avis divers" (petites annonces d'emplois, d'offices à vendre, de biens à louer ou vendre.), mais aussi "d'effets perdus et trouvés" ("on a perdu, dans le parterre de la Comédie, une Montre d'Or, à répétition, guillochée, ayant les bords formés de différens ors, en ruban, & portant le nom de J. Leroi, à Paris ; elle étoit attachée à une chaîne à trois branches, à perles & à deux médaillons, avec deux bagues, sur une cassolette & clef de même métal [. ]" ou dans le numéro du 19 janvier 1786 : "Vendredi, 13 du courant, il s'est envolé de l'Archevêché un gros Perroquet hara. Récompense à qui le rapportera au Suisse dudit hôtel"). A la suite, on lit des comptes-rendus d'ouvrages de sciences et de littérature (ainsi, le 18 février 1786, une longue recension de la suite et fin des Opinions de Tristram Shandy de Sterne), le détail des spectacles (le 10 janvier 1786 : "Petits Comédiens privilégiés de Mgr le Duc d'Orléans &c aujourd. à 10 h. du soir, Grand Bal, paré & masqué. Prix : 30 s. par personne" ou "Automate escamoteur hollandais, dans la loge de bois, sur les fossés de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, aujourdh. à 4 h. & 7 h. du soir. Dans ce journal, le mathématicien Paul Larroque, né à Tonneins, rédigeait les articles intitulés "Epoques historiques". Bon exemplaire (petit trou de ficelle à chaque numéro, qq. livraisons plus usagées mais très bon état général) pour cet ensemble remarquable, de toute rareté en mains privées, réunissant près de 3 années sur les 6 années d'existence du journal (créé en 1784 et interrompu en 1790).
