The first state binding, with cream cloth, title and author stamped in gilt. The second issue binding was nearly identical, but the covers were stamped in blind. Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page. Il…lustrated endpapers. Light rubbing along lower edge of text block. This copy appears unread. In the publisher's suppressed first state jacket, $17.50 on the front flap, "10/71" date code on rear flap, light shelf wear, bright illustrations, a near fine example. The first state jacket, designed by Larry Rivers, was distributed to subscribers and advance reviewers. It was suppressed because of the depiction of a nude male on the front cover and was replaced with a typographic jacket. The Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara, published posthumously, shared the 1972 National Book Award for Poetry. The twenty-two year old author's first book published by a mainstream press, which excitedly mentions in his author bio on rear flap the recently completed "remarkable and long-awaited Basketball Diaries." Completed or not, that memoir was not published until 1978, by the Tombouctou Press.
