Aan het einde van de middeleeuwen bestond in het huidige provincie Nederlands Limburg en aangrenzende gebieden in Duitsland en Belgie een levendige productie van houtsculptuur. De vraag ernaar was groot want de Luiks-Bourgondische oorlogen van de vijftiende eeuw hadden grote verwoesting aangericht en vele kerken moesten worden heropgebouwd en opnieuw worden ingericht. Vaak weten we niet wie deze beelden heeft besteld of wie ze gemaakt heeft, maar dat de makers, of beter ateliers, van zeer hoge kwaliteit waren laat het nog overgebleven werk duidelijk zien. Om toch enig houvast te krijgen werden deze beeldhouwers met een zogenaamde 'noodnaam' voorzien, en veruit de bekendste daarvan is de zogenaamde 'Meester van Elsloo'.
