Und damit sind wir in einer gar nicht so schlechten Lage, da Jordanes - wenn auch kein Historikertalent - so doch ein nicht nur äußerst fleißiger, sondern auch ein zu selbständiger Beurteilung und Behandlung seines Stoffes durchaus fähiger Intellektueller war, der bei der Abfassung seines opus tumultuarium einen sicheren, freilich nicht unfehlbaren Redaktorensinn für das Wesentliche (sensus) seines Stoffes an den Tag gelegt hat. Als er seine von ihm selbst als opusculum (Get. 1, 88), storiuncula (Rom. 6) und parvissimus libellas (Rom. 4, 5) apostrophierten Werke schrieb, hatte er klare Vorstellungen davon, was und ein für doctissimi (Rom. 7) bestimmtes im hohen Stil zu bedeuten haben. Diese Einschätzung des Jordanes soll im Folgenden durch die Klarstellung seines Verhältnisses zum Chronikwerk des Marcellinus Comes - ein Schlüsselproblem auf dem Wege zur richtigen Beurteilung seiner Arbeitsweise -, daneben aber auch durch die Behandlung mancher anderer umstrittener Punkte seiner Schriften gerechtfertigt werden.
